JOB: Seasonal Community Organizer - Temporary, Full-Time (Starting ASAP)

JOB SUMMARY

Matahari seeks an energetic, self-directed, reliable, and creative Community Organizer (“the Organizer”) to organize tipped workers (such as restaurant, nail salon, and uber/Lyft workers) to win policy that eliminates subminimum wages. This position is a full-time (37.5 hours/week @ $22/hour), non-benefitted, a three-month term with an immediate start date paying $22/hour. Upon completion, there is potential for a full-time, benefitted position. The majority of work is done remotely with periodic socially distanced meetings and mobilizations. This position will report to the Lead Organizer.

The Organizer will bring together restaurant and other tipped workers and their representatives and allies to demand One Fair Wage policy that aims to eliminate subminimum wages in the state of Massachusetts. The Organizer will work with tipped worker leaders and local organizations that represent them to conduct outreach, leadership development, and mobilization of tipped workers in support of the One Fair Wage policy campaigns in MA, as well as represent One Fair Wage to other allies and funders.

About Matahari Women Workers’ Center

Founded in 2002, Matahari Women Workers’ Center is a Greater Boston community based social justice organization of women and families working to end gender violence and exploitation. We aim to develop the leadership of women who are directly impacted by and have survived gender violence and exploitation by means of domestic or sexual violence, labor trafficking, and wage theft; and to address the root causes of social injustices that women face. The core of our work is grassroots leadership development and the empowerment of women workers and their families to change laws and conditions that impact us. Our mission is to work to end gender violence and exploitation.

Through an exciting and innovative collaboration, Matahari is partnering with One Fair Wage to anchor the campaign in Massachusetts to unite behind the shared commitment to abolish subminimum wages for all workers. The OneFairWage campaign seeks to lift millions of tipped and subminimum wage workers nationally out of poverty by requiring all employers to pay the full minimum wage (“One Fair Wage”) with fair, non-discriminatory tips on top.

About OneFairWage

The One Fair Wage campaign is a national campaign to eliminate the subminimum wage for 6 million tipped and other subminimum wage workers across the country through state and federal law. Originally founded by the Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC) United, a national restaurant workers’ organization, as the majority of tipped workers work in restaurants, the campaign has spun off into a broader, separate entity that is fighting for a full, fair wage for all tipped and subminimum wage workers, including tipped delivery workers and drivers at app-based companies. Today, One Fair Wage legislation is moving multiple states and in Congress.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develop plan for texting or phone banking tipped workers from our database of over 10,000 workers, activating member leaders and volunteers as needed to build the base

  • Phone bank, email, and use broadcast messaging, and peer-to-peer texting to engage tipped workers in organizing and mobilization efforts

  • Develop committee of restaurant and other tipped workers that will lead strategy and actions in the fight for One Fair Wage

  • Supporting individuals who want to take leadership in the One Fair Wage campaign and work individually with emerging leaders to develop their skills 

  • Working with worker-leaders to plan, carry out, community actions and events, including knowing your rights training, virtual town halls, etc.

  • Mobilization: Organize public demonstrations related to corporate and elected targets to demonstrate worker power to win One Fair Wage -- at times as part of nationally coordinated plan.

  • Campaign Coordination: Lead and re-engage the local coalition of organizations representing various tipped worker sectors, support the development and implementation of a legislative targeting strategy, and support local press events and other communications efforts, and more. Some lobbying.

  • Assist in translation of outreach and training materials and occasional meeting and event interpretation

  • Support communications and online presence by creating simple graphics, copywriting and translation

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 2 years of organizing experience (organizing experience with immigrants/communities of color preferred and experience with the restaurant industry preferred) and strong skills in organizing practices, including 1-1 meetings, outreach, agitation and engagement, and leadership development.

  • Strongly preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Kreyol  

  • Agreement and alignment with Matahari’s purpose and values, understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color;   

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and organizational skills;   

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team;   

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends   

  • Proficient technology skills, particularly with social media (facebook), databases (EveryAction), Google Apps (Drive, Gmail, Docs,  etc.), Zoom, webinar and chat tools. Familiarity with peer-to-peer texting preferred.
