STATEMENT OF VISION AND VALUES

We are domestic workers (nannies, house cleaners and care workers) and restaurant workers. We envision a world free of gender-based violence in which all workers are safe, valued, and live with dignity.

AT MATAHARI, WE ARE WORKING TOWARD A BEAUTIFUL VISION

  • We are working towards a day when femme labor and workers are valued and respected.

  • We want to bring an end to wage theft, subminimum wages, labor trafficking, and other forms of economic exploitation that are so prevalent for women at work.

  • We want to build authentic and lasting solidarity among Black, Indigenous and Women of Color workers in low-wage sectors.

  • To win this vision, we must work together to build multilingual spaces so that everyone can communicate in the language in which we feel most comfortable and build power across our communities.

AS MATAHARI MEMBERS, WE AGREE TO UPHOLD THESE VALUES:

  • Relationship building. We look for opportunities to deepen connections and build authentic, mutual relationships across lines of difference.

  • Justice at the center. We work to recognize the ways that racism, sexism, classism, xenophobia, and ableism impact all of us, and to fight for our collective liberation.

  • Participatory decision making. We design mutually acceptable solutions to address the issues affecting us, and seek to make decisions by consensus rather than majority vote.

  • Shared strategy and vision. We align around a shared strategy and messaging and we are unified in the ways we talk about our work to external audiences.

  • Continuous learning. We work to develop a shared political analysis and sharpen our organizing skills by asking questions, attending workshops, and applying what we learn.

FURTHERMORE, WE AGREE TO:

  • Respect decisions made by Matahari’s staff and Steering Committee. Members are not directors, employees, officials or agents of Matahari.

  • Be truthful and ethical in all activities conducted on behalf of Matahari.

  • Only represent Matahari to the media, ally organizations or government if we are selected and trained to do so by Matahari staff, so that we ensure common messages.

Matahari reserves the right to discontinue any individual’s membership at any time, for any reason including failure to uphold this statement of vision and values. This document was last updated December 2022.
